The Beginners Guide to Why Businesses are Constantly Hiring Freelance Writers
Want to learn why businesses of all sizes are in constant need of written content and reliable freelance writers? Let’s take a look!
As you began entertaining the idea of being a freelance writer, you likely had some knowledge that there is a viable market for those skills. Perhaps you have a friend or family member that makes money writing, or heard about it while researching ways to make money from home.
In either case, businesses are hiring freelance writers every single day! From Fortune 500 companies down to small blogs and start-ups, there has always been and will always be a demand for those with writing skills.
Freelance writers produce content. And if you have read anything about SEO (search engine optimization), branding, sales, and marketing, content is KING which ultimately leads to sales and brand awareness!
For instance, one form of marketing that has exploded over the past decade is content marketing. Content marketing is the act of a business creating written and visual content to their audience so they can learn about the company and its products or services. This includes blog posts, videos, podcasts, white papers, presentations and much more.
According to a recent marketing statistics study by Hubspot, companies spend 46% of their budget on content creation and 70% of marketers are actively investing in content marketing. They also mention that blogs are among the primary three forms of media used in content strategies today.
All of this is great news for freelance writers. Businesses, blogs, websites, magazines, and publications are pumping out content more than ever and spending money to get it done. Many companies do not have the staff, or enough employees, to consistently produce this valuable content.
This is just one of the reasons why the freelance writing market has exploded.
According to a Fast Company report, 35% of the U.S. workforce is now freelancing, which is 10 million more than just 5 years ago.
A recent CNBC article states: “Freelancers doing skilled services earn a median rate of $28 an hour, earning more per hour than 70% of workers in the overall U.S. economy.”
These, along with countless reports and industry insights, show that there is clearly a growing demand and acceptance for freelance workers and a need for our writing services.

Why don’t companies just hire and retain full-time writers?
You might be thinking: Can’t businesses hire their own writers in house instead of using freelancers and independent contractors?
Of course. Some of them can and some of them do. However, it does not make sense for many other companies for a variety of reasons.
One of the biggest reasons comes down to money (as with everything in business). As business owners ourselves, we understand the costs associated with full time employees. The costs associated with finding, hiring, training, and paying staff adds up. Not to mention the costs for health insurance, payroll taxes, and retirement benefits.
With that being said, hiring a freelancer or independent contractor can significantly reduce many of those costs. This is one of the main reasons why full-time writers are not hired by companies.
One of our recent clients is a relatively large business with many employees. They have two physical warehouses, a large e-commerce business, and a marketing team. Did that stop them from hiring a freelance writer? Absolutely not! Their team is already busy enough with day to day activities and they need the help. Hiring and using a freelance writer is EASIER for them and likely saves them time and money (now that’s a winning formula for writers like us).
We have seen many other examples and real world experiences working with a variety of companies. The bottom line is that there is a constant need for freelance writers and digital content. New and existing businesses have and will continue to hire freelance writers for their content, copywriting, and other writing needs!
